5 Good Reads to Start 2018 in a Mindful and Healthy Way

I am not sure what your New Year’s resolutions are but, if you are anything like me, you probably have at least one resolution that is about learning, expanding your knowledge, growing personally or, something along those lines. In preparation for the new year, my husband and I usually do some research on reviews of the “best reads” from the year ending and order our favourites. Needless to say, many times we end up ordering far more than we can read in one year…but I must admit, there is something very exciting about having a tower of books in my library, waiting to be discovered.

In the last few years many of you have reached out asking me to share some of my favourite books on mindfulness, meditation and self-help. So this year, I decided to write a few blog posts that include a list of my favourite books and a brief description of why I think everyone should read them at least once in their lifetime! I am also excited about the fact that you will be able to purchase some of these books at Olga’s Way! That’s right, I keep giving you reasons to come visit us!

So here are my top 5 book suggestions to start 2018 in a motivated, open hearted and focused way! When you are ready, grab a cozy blanket, a nice warm drink, sit back and go over this list to make your selection…enjoy!


#1 True Love, a practice for awakening the heart

by: Thich Nhat Hanh

When it comes to mindfulness and meditation, there is no better writer out there than, Thich Nhat Hanh. I personally own many of his books and have enjoyed reading them all, however; True Love has been one of my top favourite books for many years now. It is the kind of book that I refer to multiple times a year and each time I read it, I get something new out of it. The interesting part is that the book is only 100 pages long, yet it has so much wonderful information in it. True love teaches us to use mindfulness as a tool for communication. It contains gentle reminders of opening our ears, words, and hearts to the sounds of verbal andnon-verbal communication. It has a special way of reminding us how interconnected we all are, and awakening a sense of compassion that will lead to the improvement of all relationship in our lives.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their personal connections, their communication skills and, to couples.

#2 Daring Greatly, How having the courage to be vulnerable, transforms the way we live, love, parent and lead.

It was last year when I came into contact with this wonderful book. I had previously read other work by Brene and always admired her style and the research behind her work, however; this book has been life changing for me. There is something very powerful about the way in which the book invites us to look at the concept of vulnerability as a tool to living a happy and fulfilled life. It is a guide to let go of fear, guilt and, shame and to jump into the wagon of unconditional, imperfect love. Trust me when I say that this book will liberate you from your own chains.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is terrified of loving fully,  committing to someone or something and, to those afraid of being rejected.


#3 Get your sh*t together, How to stop worrying about what you should do, so you can finish what you need to do and start doing what you want to do

This book came into my hands fairly recently and very quickly made it to my top 10 favs! Why, you ask? Well, to put it in plain language, the book is a simple guide that cuts through the chase and gets to what really, really matters when it comes to getting things done. If you are willing to let go of excuses and, are ready to become accountable to yourself, give this book a try. As a life coach, I have come across many books to help with goal setting and maintenance and I can honestly say this book is by far the best I’ve read on the matter. It is short, to the point and it lights a fire in the reader’s belly to get started on their goals. Its hands on tools are easy to apply to any goal you may currently have. Indeed a “must have” kind of book.

I highly recommend this book to all procrastinators out there and, to those who are contemplating boycotting adulthood or, those who are overwhelmed by a current project and want to learn how to make it manageable.

#4 Why Meditate? Working with thoughts and emotions

Why Meditate is a wonderful book written to help any beginners in their journey to meditate. I absolutely love how simple, factual and easy to read this book is. Sometimes, meditation books can be complex to understand and long to read, but this book is neither. The book does an excellent job answering the question of why should anyone meditate, and it guides you on how to get started on a regular practice. It contains meditation scripts and teachings that you will be able to apply all by yourself.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning a little more about meditation. To new mediators and, to those who guide meditations. This book is really a great resource of information to have in your library.


#5  52 Small Changes for the Mind

In one of my trips to New York last year, I found this gem hiding in the back of a bookshelf. I have since ordered many and gifted them to friends and clients. I fell in love with the simplicity of the book. It guides the reader to make one small change every week of the year. Each change suggested has an impact on memory, stress reduction, productivity and happiness. It is pretty much like having a happiness coach with you at all times. The suggestions are easy to implement, the information is factual and interesting and it even has a section on tools and resources where you can keep track of your thoughts, goals, fears and progress. It really is an encouraging guide to create healthy and happy habits.

If you are looking at finding an “in-home” life coach, this book is for you. I recommend it specifically to highly motivated individuals who are looking to challenge themselves each week by adding small changes to their lives.
