Everybody has habits. Whether we’re aware of them or not, we all have them. Some habits we develop are good for us, but there are also habits that don’t serve us. Habits we need to break away from.
In this episode, I would like to share with you how you can break away from old habits, specifically mental habits that debilitate you. I’m going to teach you how to create new habits starting with your mindset. Choose, change, reflect, embrace, and substitute your habits and be a better you.
Choose Your Habits
Everybody knows for a fact that habits are what builds up our life. It’s a part of our routine, a part of our behavior. That is why it is important to pay attention to our habits. Choose to have habits that empower you, choose to have habits that are healthy, that ultimately improve your quality of life. And that begins in your mindset. When you decide to change your mindset and put action to it, that will greatly affect the quality of your life.
Each day, strive to replace all habits that support the life you want to live, goals that you want to reach, by developing new habits. Take charge of your habits and achieve a higher standard of living, happiness, love, wealth, and health.
You Can Change Old Habits
Choosing to change your habit is the easy part, but working constantly towards change is the hardest. Remember, in order to break an old habit and create a new one, you have to be a hundred percent committed. Be patient, remain positive, confident, even during the challenging times. Change develops your ability to move forward, create new habits and release the habit that is no longer serving you.
Reflect On Habits That Are Challenging
Reflection is important in breaking old habits. Ask yourself questions and discover which habits you want to let go. Don’t just ask them in your head, grab a pen and journal your reflections. Journaling is a powerful tool, it holds the key to self-growth and self-awareness.
There are three guide questions you can ask yourself and reflect on. First, What habits are creating challenges in your life? This could be physical habits or mental habits. Second, What habits would I like to adopt? Adopting a child is a choice and adopting a new habit is no different. Think about adopting habits that will help you overcome a challenge. And third, How will my life change if I prompt these negative habits and replace them with positive ones? Take your time in doing this, especially if you listed more than one negative habit you might have. In other words, a habit that challenges you.
Embrace Change And Challenges
Embracing change and challenges will get you excited. Excited of the outcome, the future, and your ultimate goal, create a new habit and let go of the old one. It is important to bring your mindset to a place of excitement, because your mind is actually the first obstacle to your goal. When all that’s set, great things will come your way.
Substitute Your Habit
When you notice that you have developed a bad habit and you want to change it, think by substituting it with a better one. For instance, I once had a craving for KitKat right after lunch and it has developed into a habit. And after I recognized that it’s becoming a bad habit, I had to interrupt that thought and think of solutions. In the end, I chose a healthier option, a fruit tea. It has still satisfied my sweet cravings, but this time I chose something healthier.
Instead of just trying to abruptly stop a habit, think of other options, substitute your habit. This way, you don’t deprive yourself but you’re just choosing a better route for you.
If you’re having a hard time, remember any of these phrases that I used to say to myself: I am trading my old habits for better ones to support my dreams for the future, I’ve replaced my old habits with new empowering habits or I am taking positive steps towards implementing new heights in reaching my goals.
Also, the number one skill that you need throughout your entire process is patience. Change is not easy, and your mind can resist, but your will is stronger. Again, breaking old habits is not easy but it is a hundred percent possible. And that starts with your mindset.
